Chapter 17

With minutes left to spare on her lunch break, Sam jogged into the trauma center and stopped short, almost getting clipped. Nurses wheeled a crash cart passed her and into one of the exam rooms, and Nurse Pritchard barked orders at some orderlies from her command post. Sam summoned focus and energy for another intense case.

Gut Guy.

She hadn’t been able to make out his face with burns covering most of his left side. He’d been close to the initial blast or in one of the few isolated car explosions that had occurred afterward. She felt sorry for him, as he would have a very long and painful recovery.

The thought of the truck explosion brought a shiver down Sam's spine as she tucked her bag underneath Nurse Pritchard's desk so she could prepare to assist. She would put it away in the locker room later. The truck was involved in criminal activity. People had been severely injured in the pile-up. A young girl's mother had died. Her shivers evaporated as her blood boiled. Having been the victim of violent crime, her sense of justice flared for those whose lives would be forever changed, and hopefully not for the worse.

Where had she gotten this newfound surge of fire? Of strength? Reconciling with her family had given her the stability she had missed since having doubts about Crete's faithfulness and then finding his lover standing in their house with a knife in her hand and murder in her eyes. Sam would soak up that strength knowing she had a deep well she return to in her brothers and even her father.

“I still can’t believe Gut Guy walked out of here on his own,” Sam said. “He should've collapsed from his injuries.”

“They were extensive. Must've wanted out badly to risk his life like that. He’s in ICU three,” Nurse Pritchard responded.

“Got it. Thank you, Nurse Pritchard. Mind if I leave my bag here?” Sam pointed to her clutch nestled in one of the station's large bottom drawers. “I promise to put it in her locker later when I have the time.”

“I’ll guard it, don’t you worry. Do what you gotta do.” Nurse Pritchard eyed her with eagle precision. “You’re doing well, Nurse Clark. Are you finding your way?”

“I think so. I love the work. Fast-paced, unpredictable, exciting. It's another world compared to holding babies.”

“It is that. But we get some babies from time to time, unfortunately for us. I always say to expect the unexpected.”

Sam passed through the double doors to the small ICU section housing the patients needing the most critical care. Nurse Pritchard’s words echoed in her ears.

Expect the unexpected.

The unexpected was Dr. Huxley Armstrong. She hadn’t had time to think of the ramifications of their kiss with her family’s reunion and Gut Guy’s return. Sam hurried to Gut Guy. Outside ICU room three, she snatched the chart from its holder, grateful to have something to look at and keep her composure. She busied herself with checking the man's vitals and making sure his bandages didn't require changing.
